iOS 26.2 beta 3 introduces a helpful new AirDrop feature that makes sharing files with non-contacts easier and more secure.

Apple has added Temporary AirDrop Access using shareable codes so you can send files to someone without adding them to your contacts or turning AirDrop on for everyone.

How the New AirDrop Code Works

In iOS 26.2, a new option called Get AirDrop Code appears in the AirDrop menu. This code can be shared with anyone who is not saved in your contacts. Once they enter the code on their device, both iPhones can locate each other through AirDrop.

Apple describes the feature like this:

“Share a secure code with people not in your contacts to use AirDrop. You will be able to find each other for the next 30 days. You can manage access in Settings.”

This creates a controlled connection with a single person instead of opening AirDrop for everyone in your vicinity.

Access Lasts 30 Days

Temporary access stays active for up to 30 days. This is ideal for situations such as:

  • Collaborating on a short-term project
  • Sharing files with classmates or coworkers
  • Sending media to someone you are meeting temporarily
  • Avoiding the need to add someone as a full contact

You can also remove access whenever you choose.

How to Manage People You Have Shared Codes With

Apple added a dedicated section in Settings to keep track of anyone who has your temporary AirDrop access.

Go to:

Settings > General > AirDrop > Manage Known AirDrop Contacts

Here, you can view and remove people who have access.

Why This Matters

AirDrop has always been convenient, but the controls were limited. You could restrict sharing to contacts, turn it off, or briefly open it to everyone nearby. Shareable codes offer a smarter middle option. It is private, temporary, and far more flexible.

This new addition in iOS 26.2 is small but extremely practical. It is one of those features that quickly becomes part of your everyday workflow.
