Most iPhone updates don’t feel urgent anymore. A lot of them arrive with vague “bug fixes and improvements” notes, and most people end up installing them days or even weeks later.
But iOS 26.5 is one of those updates you probably shouldn’t ignore for too long.
Behind the relatively small feature list, Apple has patched more than 50 security vulnerabilities across iPhone and iPad. That alone makes this a much bigger release than it first appears.
Here are the biggest reasons to install it ASAP.
1. Apple fixed more than 50 security flaws
This is the biggest reason. According to Apple, iOS 26.5 patches dozens of vulnerabilities tied to:
- WebKit
- Kernel access
- Images and media files
- Spotlight
- Shortcuts
- Screenshots
Some of these bugs could potentially expose sensitive data or cause apps and websites to behave unexpectedly.
Even though Apple says none of the vulnerabilities were actively exploited, security updates become more important once the technical details are public.
2. Safari and WebKit got important fixes
A big chunk of the update focuses on WebKit, the engine powering Safari and many web-based apps on iPhone.
Apple fixed multiple WebKit vulnerabilities that could:
- Leak sensitive information
- Cause websites to crash
- Trigger unexpected behavior through malicious content
That means simply browsing the web becomes safer after updating.
3. This is likely one of the final stable iOS 26 releases
We’re now very close to WWDC 2026, where Apple will unveil iOS 27. At this stage of the cycle, Apple usually focuses heavily on stability, performance, and security.
That makes iOS 26.5 one of the most polished releases in the iOS 26 cycle so far.
4. You still get actual new features
Unlike smaller emergency patches, this update isn’t just about security.
Apple also added:
- Suggested Places in Apple Maps
- Continued testing for encrypted RCS messaging
- New accessory features for EU users
They’re smaller additions, but they make this feel like a complete update rather than just a maintenance release.
5. Older iPhones are getting security updates too
One underrated part of this rollout is that Apple also pushed updates for older devices that can’t run iOS 26.
That includes:
- iOS 18.7.9
- iPadOS 17.7.11
- iOS 16.7.16
- iOS 15.8.8
That’s a strong sign Apple considers these fixes important enough to backport across multiple generations.
Should you update immediately?
In this case, yes. Even if you don’t care about the smaller feature additions, the sheer number of security fixes makes iOS 26.5 an update worth installing sooner rather than later.
And with iOS 27 around the corner, this is probably one of the last major “stability-first” updates before Apple shifts focus entirely to the next generation.
