WhatsApp is testing AI-powered chat summaries using Meta AI to help users quickly catch up on unread messages in groups, channels, and chats. Currently rolling out to Android beta users.

The tool is designed to help people catch up faster without scrolling through long message threads. While currently in beta testing on Android, the feature is expected to roll out more widely soon.

AI Summaries for Unread Messages

The new feature, uncovered by WABetaInfo, introduces a “Summarize with Meta AI” button when there’s a large number of unread messages. This button replaces the usual “X unread messages” label. When tapped, it generates a short summary of the conversation, helping you quickly understand what you missed.

This is particularly useful for active group chats where dozens of messages can pile up fast. With this feature, you won’t need to go through every single message to get the gist.

Focus on Privacy

WhatsApp says the summarization process uses Meta AI’s Private Processing. This means no message content is stored or linked to your account. The summaries are generated in a secure cloud environment and deleted immediately after.

Also, the feature won’t work in chats with Advanced Privacy enabled. In those cases, message content remains untouched by AI, even with end-to-end encryption in place.

Still in Beta, Android Only for Now

Right now, AI message summaries are only available to a limited number of Android beta users. There’s no official word yet on when the feature will come to iOS or expand globally.

More AI Features in the Works

WhatsApp is also developing another tool called “Writing Help,” which will let users polish or rewrite their messages for clarity or tone before sending. Like summaries, it will use the same privacy-focused AI system.

With features like AI summaries and writing tools, WhatsApp is clearly aiming to make messaging smarter, while keeping user privacy intact.
