Apple has rolled out a new beta of Xcode 26, and it comes with major AI upgrades. The headline? Built-in support for OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.

GPT-5 Is Now the Default in Xcode

When Apple previewed Xcode 26 at WWDC 2024, it promised developers would be able to tap into AI to write code, fix bugs, and generate documentation. With the latest beta (beta 7), Apple is upgrading the experience by making GPT-5 the default model in Xcode.

Developers now get two options:

  • GPT-5: Fast, optimized for everyday coding tasks.
  • GPT-5 (Reasoning): Slower, but designed for complex projects requiring deeper accuracy.

For those who prefer, GPT-4.1 remains available.

Claude Integration Joins Xcode

On top of GPT-5, Apple is also adding support for Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4. Developers can sign in with their Claude account in Xcode’s Intelligence settings and instantly start using it.

Between GPT-5, Claude, local models on Apple silicon Macs, and API key integration, Xcode 26 now offers one of the most flexible AI-assisted coding setups out there.

Why It Matters for Developers

With AI models directly embedded, Xcode is becoming a one-stop AI-powered IDE. The combination of GPT-5’s reasoning ability and Claude’s natural coding support could help developers move faster, debug smarter, and stay inside Apple’s development ecosystem.
