After nearly a year of delay, Microsoft’s AI-powered Recall feature is finally rolling out for Copilot+ PCs.

Originally unveiled in 2024, Recall is now officially available via a free Windows 11 update for supported devices running Intel, AMD, or Qualcomm chips.

What is Recall?

Recall is designed to act like a photographic memory for your PC. It continuously takes snapshots of your screen and stores them locally, letting you “recall” anything you’ve previously seen. Whether it’s a website you browsed, a document you edited, or an app you had open, Recall can help you find it fast with natural language prompts.

Think of it as AI-powered time travel for your desktop.

Privacy and Security Updates

Recall was met with heavy criticism from privacy advocates when first announced, mainly due to concerns around constant screen capturing. Microsoft took the feedback seriously and made major privacy-focused adjustments. Now, all data is processed locally, and users can control what’s save, or turn it off entirely.

New Features Alongside Recall

The update also introduces a few more Copilot+ tricks:

  • Click to Do: A smart overlay that lets you take contextual actions on whatever’s on your screen — like summarizing or translating text.
  • Natural Language Search: Just type a plain English request like “show me that presentation I had open yesterday,” and Windows will surface the right content.

EU Rollout Delayed

While the global rollout is underway, users in the EU and surrounding regions (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein) will have to wait a bit longer, Microsoft says availability there will come later in 2025.

The Bottom Line

Microsoft’s push to bring more AI into Windows 11 is heating up. With Recall and other Copilot+ features finally going live, the next-gen Windows experience is starting to take shape.
