Apple just made it super simple for anyone with the iOS 26 beta to test upcoming AirPods features; no Mac, no Xcode, and no complex setup required.
AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 Users Running iOS 26 Beta, Can Now Opt Into Beta Firmware Directly from the iPhone’s Settings App
As previewed during WWDC, iOS 26 brings some exciting new features to supported AirPods models, especially the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4. Here’s what’s on the way:
- Camera Remote: Use your AirPods’ stems to snap photos or start video recordings from your iPhone.
- Studio-Quality Audio Recording: A new pro-level audio feature originally seen in iPhone 16’s Audio Mix is now coming to AirPods.
- Sleep Detection Auto-Pause: Content will automatically pause when AirPods detect that you’ve fallen asleep.
- Automatic Switching with CarPlay: Your AirPods will now switch to CarPlay just like they do between your Apple devices.
These features are expected to launch publicly with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 this fall.
How to Get the New AirPods Beta Firmware
Alongside these announcements, Apple also released AirPods beta firmware build 8A279d, giving early access to some of these features.
The biggest news? You can now install AirPods beta firmware directly from your iPhone:
- Make sure you’re on the iOS 26 beta. Check out out this guide on how to do that: iOS 26 Beta 1, iPadOS 26 Beta 1 OTA Update: How to Download and Install
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth > Your AirPods > AirPods Beta Updates.
- Toggle on beta updates.
- Now make sure your AirPods are connected to your iPhone or iPad which is connected to WiFi and that the AirPods in their charging case, lid closed, and connected to a charger.
Wait about 30 mins, the update should be complete. How do you know? Yea, this one’s a bit strange, but you don’t. Check the firmware version of your AirPods to make sure. Yes, not kidding.
Why It Matters
This is the first time Apple has made beta firmware updates for AirPods so accessible. Previously, you needed a Mac, Xcode, and some patience. Now it’s as simple as a toggle, just like on iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.
With this change, Apple is making it easier for users and developers to test new AirPods features early, potentially improving feedback and quality ahead of public launches.
