Apple continues to refine multitasking on iPad with iPadOS 26.2 beta 3, bringing back familiar features from iPadOS 18 while improving the new window-based system introduced in iPadOS 26.
Slide Over and Split View Return
When iOS 26 launched, Apple removed Slide Over and traditional Split View in favor of a new tiled multitasking system. While the tiled mode partially replaced Split View, Slide Over was entirely gone, leaving many users frustrated.
In iPadOS 26.1, Apple brought back a basic version of Slide Over. Now, iOS 26.2 beta 3 expands on that, making it easier to manage multiple apps simultaneously and closer to the iPadOS 18 experience.
Drag and Drop Functionality
With iPadOS 26.2 beta 3, users can drag apps from the Dock, Spotlight search, or App Library to various positions on the screen to enter Slide Over or Split View:
- Drag an app to the left or right edge for Slide Over
- Drag an app to the left or right side for a Split View–style tiled view
- Drag to the center to open a larger or smaller floating window
Visual indicators help you see exactly where the app will appear, making multitasking more intuitive. If you already have apps in Slide Over or Split View, you can drag a new app over one of them to replace it, while keeping the original app open to return to later.
Why It Matters
For iPad users who missed the multitasking system from iPadOS 18, this update restores flexibility and control. You can now quickly switch between apps, combine them in different layouts, and make better use of the iPad’s large screen.
iPadOS 26.2 is expected to launch to the public this December, so beta testers have the opportunity to explore the updated multitasking system ahead of everyone else.
