X has officially rolled out Chat, a fully upgraded version of its old DM system that now supports encrypted conversations, video and voice calls, disappearing messages, and more.

The update is live on iOS and the web, while an Android version is listed as “coming soon.”

This new messaging experience replaces the existing DM system on X, but all your previous messages will still show up.

What’s New in X Chat?

End-to-End Encryption (With a Catch)

Messages and files are now protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning only the people in the chat can read them.
However, X does note a few limitations:

  • Encryption does not cover metadata like timestamps or who received the message.
  • There’s currently no protection against man-in-the-middle attacks.
  • X even admits that if “a malicious insider or X itself” compromised a conversation, users wouldn’t know.

X says verification tools for message authenticity and device identity will arrive later.

Disappearing Messages

You can now choose to have messages disappear automatically after a set time — a feature similar to Snapchat or Instagram Vanish Mode.

Users also get:

  • Screenshot notifications
  • A “block screenshots” option to stop captures entirely

Voice & Video Calling

Chat now supports:

  • Voice calls
  • Video calls
  • Voice notes (coming soon)

Editing & Deleting Messages

Just like posts on X, you can edit or delete messages after sending them — a welcome upgrade over the old system.
