ChatGPT Agent Launches with Browsing, Task Automation & API Powers
OpenAI just made ChatGPT a lot more useful. In a live announcement, CEO Sam Altman introduced ChatGPT Agent, an upgraded assistant that can browse websites, run code, interact with services, and even complete transactions on your behalf.
That’s right, it doesn’t just tell you how to do things anymore. It can do them for you.
What Is ChatGPT Agent, Really?
Think of ChatGPT Agent as a smarter, more action-oriented version of ChatGPT, combining two powerful systems:
- Operator: Known for its visual browsing and UI interaction skills
- Deep Research: Known for processing and summarizing web pages lightning fast
Now fused together with API and terminal access, this makes ChatGPT Agent capable of:
- Browsing and interacting with real websites
- Asking clarifying questions to better understand your goal
- Running code and analyzing files
- Using APIs like Google Calendar, Google Drive, SharePoint, GitHub, and more
- Providing a full timeline of what it did and how it reasoned its way through tasks
How It Works
Once you assign a task, ChatGPT spins up a secure virtual machine and gets to work. It can:
- Visit websites
- Log in (with your help)
- Click buttons, fill forms, retrieve or send data
- Summarize articles or documents
- Execute code on the fly
You can pause or take over at any time, or even give new instructions mid-task.

Security and Caution
OpenAI says it has trained ChatGPT Agent to recognize malicious websites or scammy behavior, but it also warns users to remain cautious.
