YouTube has just released a new update for its iOS and iPadOS app, and it comes with a big change for older Apple device users. As of version 20.22.1, the YouTube app now requires iOS 16 or later to run, dropping support for a handful of older iPhones and iPads in the process.
The Latest Version of YouTube for iOS Does Not Work With Older iPhones and iPads That Cannot Run iOS 16 and iPadOS 16
While the update notes simply mention “bug fixes and performance improvements,” what’s not mentioned is the change in system requirements. The app no longer supports devices running anything below iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 as has been noted by MacRumors.
That means if you’re using an older iPhone or iPad, you may no longer be able to update or use the YouTube app. Here are the Apple devices that are no longer supported:
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (1st generation)
- iPad Air 2
- iPad mini 4
This change could affect a large number of users who still use older devices, especially iPads that are often handed down to kids or used solely for video streaming.
What Can You Do?
If you own one of the affected devices:
- You’ll still be able to use your current version of the app, but you won’t get any new updates or features.
- You may eventually lose access if YouTube changes backend compatibility or login requirements.
- Consider upgrading to a device that supports iOS/iPadOS 16 or later for continued support.

Final Thoughts
YouTube’s decision to raise the minimum system requirements lines up with WWDC season, where Apple is expected to roll out new OS versions. It’s a reminder that as software evolves, older hardware will inevitably be left behind. If you’re still using an older iPhone or iPad, now might be the right time to consider a new device.
