Apple has released iOS 26.5 beta 4 for developers, continuing its steady push toward a public release expected next month.
On the surface, this looks like another routine beta.
But if you’ve been following closely, there’s a bigger shift happening, and it’s centered around Apple Maps.
Apple Maps is slowly turning into something else
One of the most telling additions in recent iOS 26.5 betas is a new “Suggested Places” feature.
It sounds harmless. And for now, it is.
But paired with an earlier splash screen hinting at ads coming to Apple Maps, the direction is becoming clearer.
Apple isn’t just improving search. It’s laying the groundwork for monetization.
That’s a big shift for an app that’s traditionally been clean and distraction-free.
What’s new in iOS 26.5 beta 4
Beyond that bigger picture, beta 4 (build 23F5069b) brings a handful of smaller changes.
The most noticeable one is the integration of Suggested Places directly into Maps search, making recommendations more prominent when you’re looking for locations.
Apple is also continuing to test end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging, a feature that’s been in and out of beta builds.
In the European Union, Apple is experimenting with Live Activities support for third-party accessories, which could bring more parity with its own ecosystem products.
There are also signs that Apple may introduce a new pricing option for subscriptions, letting users pay monthly for annual plans at a discounted rate with commitment.

No major AI upgrades yet
If you’re expecting big Apple Intelligence upgrades here, you won’t find them. So far, iOS 26.5 remains relatively light on major headline features.
That likely means Apple is saving bigger AI changes for iOS 27, which will be unveiled soon at WWDC 2026.
Expected release timeline
Apple is expected to release iOS 26.5 to the public sometime in May, assuming testing continues without major issues.
