T-Mobile has announced a new real-time call translation feature, and it works on virtually any phone connected to its network.

Unlike app-based translation tools, this one is built directly into the T-Mobile network. That means you do not need to download anything, and it works across iPhone, Android, flip phones, and even landlines.

How T-Mobile live translation works

T-Mobile’s live translation feature can translate voice conversations in real time across more than 50 languages.

According to the company:

  • Conversations are translated almost instantly
  • The system automatically detects languages and speakers
  • Users can speak naturally, without special commands

The most interesting part is that only one person on the call needs to be using T-Mobile. So even if you are calling a landline or someone on another carrier, translation will still work as long as your phone is on T-Mobile’s network.

How to use it

The feature is currently in beta, and spots are limited.

To try it:

  1. Sign up for the beta on T-Mobile’s website
  2. Start a phone call
  3. Press 87 on the keypad
  4. Live translation will activate

No app. No update. No special device required.

How it compares to Apple’s call translation

Apple introduced call translation in iOS 26, but it requires compatible Apple devices. T-Mobile’s version works across different devices and platforms, and it supports more than 50 languages.

That makes this especially useful for international calls, customer service conversations, or multilingual families using different types of phones.

Is it really free?

Right now, yes. T-Mobile says the feature is free during the beta period.

However, the company has not confirmed whether it will remain free after beta testing ends. A paid tier in the future would not be surprising.

Still, as a beta feature, this is one of the more practical AI-powered additions we have seen from a carrier in a while.

If it works as smoothly as promised, it could genuinely change how people communicate across language barriers, without needing apps or expensive devices.
