If you’re still using an older iPhone, you may lose access to WhatsApp starting Sunday, June 1. The popular messaging app is ending support for devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.1, which means some older iPhones will no longer be able to use the app after this weekend.

Affected iPhones and Minimum Requirements

This change is part of WhatsApp’s routine update cycle, where the app drops support for outdated operating systems to keep up with security and feature updates.

Starting June 1, the minimum iOS version required will be 15.1. On the Android side, phones running Android 5.0 or earlier will also be cut off.

These iPhone models will be directly affected:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These iPhones have been reported to be in the firing line as well, but it’s unlikely.

  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE (1st Gen)

But there’s good news if you own one of these: they can be updated to iOS 15.8.4. If your device is fully updated, you should be safe, at least until WhatsApp raises its requirements again, likely in a year or so.

Why This Matters

Although these iPhones are quite old, many people still use them as backup phones, or they’re passed down to family members, especially kids or seniors. If someone you know still uses an older iPhone, it’s a good idea to check which version of iOS it’s running.

The original cutoff was planned for May 5, but WhatsApp gave users a few extra weeks by pushing it to June 1, giving affected users more time to update or upgrade their devices.

What You Can Do

  • Go to Settings > General > About on your iPhone to check your iOS version.
  • If your iPhone supports iOS 15.1 or later, update it now.
  • If it doesn’t, consider upgrading to a newer device if you want to keep using WhatsApp.

Final Thoughts

WhatsApp updates like this are normal, but they’re important to pay attention to, especially if you’re using an older phone. Staying current with system updates ensures your apps keep working and more importantly, that your data stays safe.
