WhatsApp is testing an AI writing assistant for iPhone users, offering rephrasing, tone adjustments, and proofreading options. Here’s how the new “Writing Help” feature works.

WhatsApp Beta for iPhone Gets AI Writing Help

The tool, spotted by WABetaInfo, mirrors the AI writing features already available on Android and marks Meta’s push to integrate smarter communication tools directly into the chat experience.

How Writing Help Works

Instead of the sticker icon, users in the beta will see a pen symbol in the chat bar when the feature is enabled. Tapping it opens AI suggestions that improve the clarity, structure, or tone of a draft message.

The AI offers at least three alternative versions of the typed text, based on five style options:

  • Rephrase – improves clarity and flow
  • Professional – makes the tone more formal
  • Funny – adds humor to the text
  • Supportive – makes the message more empathetic
  • Proofread – corrects grammar and spelling

Users can accept a suggestion or stick with their original draft, and recipients are not notified if AI assistance was used.

Privacy and Availability

Meta says Writing Help runs on its Private Processing system, meaning messages are processed anonymously, encrypted, and never stored. Importantly, the AI only scans the draft text in the input box — not the full chat history.

The feature is currently disabled by default and must be turned on manually. Since it’s still in beta via TestFlight, there’s no official release date yet.

How It Differs From Apple’s Writing Tools

Apple’s own Writing Tools in iOS 18 let users rewrite, proofread, or summarize text across most apps with a simple long-press in a text field. However, Meta hasn’t enabled these native Apple Intelligence tools in WhatsApp, which may explain the rollout of its own AI-powered writing assistant.

Final Thoughts

While it’s still in testing, WhatsApp’s AI-powered Writing Help could make day-to-day messaging faster, clearer, and even funnier — depending on the style you pick. With Meta accelerating its AI push, it likely won’t be long before this feature reaches all iPhone users.
