Fresh details about Apple’s next-generation Studio Display have surfaced, and the rumored upgrades are starting to paint a much clearer picture.

According to a new report from Macworld, Apple appears to be developing two updated Studio Display models with varying specifications. The information reportedly comes from references found in internal Apple files.

ProMotion and HDR still expected

The report reiterates earlier claims that both new Studio Display models could support ProMotion with refresh rates up to 120Hz. That would be a major jump from the current 60Hz panel, delivering noticeably smoother scrolling and video playback.

HDR support is also expected, which would improve brightness levels and contrast. Display analyst Ross Young has previously suggested that at least one model may adopt mini-LED backlighting, potentially bringing higher peak brightness and better local dimming performance.

Bigger screen and better hardware

For the higher-end configuration, two additional upgrades are now rumored:

  • Enhanced speakers beyond the current six-speaker system
  • More and/or higher-bandwidth ports

The existing Studio Display includes one Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports. A move to Thunderbolt 5 would make sense, especially if Apple intends to support 5K resolution at higher refresh rates while maintaining bandwidth for connected accessories.

Esposito speculates that the premium model could feature a 32-inch panel, while a lower-tier version may remain at 27 inches. That size difference has not been confirmed through internal files but aligns with Apple’s broader product segmentation strategy.

A new chip inside

Another previously rumored upgrade includes a move from the A13 Bionic chip to an A19 or A19 Pro chip. A newer chip would likely enhance image processing for the built-in camera, improve audio performance, and enable more advanced display features.

Launch timeline

Apple is reportedly targeting the first half of 2026 for release. The current Studio Display debuted in March 2022, so a refresh would arrive after a four-year cycle.

If these leaks prove accurate, Studio Display 2 could bring smoother refresh rates, improved HDR, better audio, faster connectivity, and possibly a larger screen, all while keeping the same overall design language.
