The beloved compact model officially reaches the end of support.

Apple has officially added the iPhone SE original to its obsolete products list. This means the first-generation model will no longer receive repairs, battery replacements, or any form of service at Apple Stores or Apple Authorized Service Providers worldwide.

Why the Original iPhone SE Is Now Obsolete

Apple classifies a product as obsolete when seven years have passed since it stopped selling the device. The iPhone SE original was discontinued in September 2018, so it just crossed that seven year threshold.

Originally released in March 2016, the iPhone SE original was loved for its small size and classic design. It featured a 4 inch display, Touch ID, chamfered edges, and the aluminum and glass look of the iPhone 5s. Inside, Apple used the A9 chip from the iPhone 6s lineup, which kept the compact model surprisingly powerful for its size.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s former marketing chief, said at its launch that anyone who wanted a smaller phone would appreciate the iPhone SE. That prediction turned out to be true, as the first SE earned a loyal fanbase that stuck with the form factor for years.

What Comes Next for the SE Line

Apple released updated SE models in 2020 and 2022, both of which adopted the iPhone 8 style body with a home button and LCD display. In early 2025, Apple removed the SE series entirely from its lineup after the introduction of the iPhone 16e, which now fills the role of the more affordable entry option.

The original iPhone SE has officially reached its final chapter, but it remains one of the most iconic compact iPhones Apple has ever made.
