Apple’s iOS 26 will automatically reserve space for system updates, solving update failures caused by low storage. Here’s how the new feature works.

This new feature was quietly confirmed in the official iOS 26 beta 1 release notes, now available for developers.

Smart Space Reservation for Updates

Previously, iPhones with limited free storage often failed to install new iOS updates, especially larger ones. This forced users to manually delete apps, videos, or photos just to update their device.

Depending on the amount of free space available, iOS might dynamically reserve update space for Automatic Updates to download and install successfully.

With iOS 26, Apple is solving that problem by adding dynamic space reservation. Here’s how it works:

  • If your iPhone doesn’t have enough space, iOS 26 will automatically reserve the space needed for future system updates.
  • This ensures that Automatic Updates won’t fail due to lack of storage.
  • You won’t need to manually clear up space or cancel downloads.

This makes automatic iPhone updates truly automatic, even for those using iPhones with smaller storage capacity.

iOS 26 Release Timeline

  • iOS 26 is currently in developer beta, with testing underway.
  • A public beta is expected in July 2025, giving more users early access.
  • The final version of iOS 26 will arrive this fall, likely in September, alongside the iPhone 17 lineup launch.

Why It Matters

This may seem like a small improvement, but for many users, especially those with 64GB or 128GB iPhones, this change means fewer interruptions and less frustration when it’s time to install updates. It also reflects Apple’s broader goal with iOS 26: making the system smarter, more efficient, and easier to maintain without manual effort.

Combined with other new features like the new Liquid Glass UI and cross-device enhancements, iOS 26 is shaping up to be a meaningful update for both design and function.
