Instagram finally rolled out its Edits app and is now available for download on both iOS and Android. Oh and it’s totally free, of course.
Edits clearly gunning for CapCut’s spot in the creator toolkit. If you’ve ever spent hours stitching together the perfect reel or story, this one’s for you.
So, What is Edits?
At its core, it’s a standalone video editing app designed with creators in mind. You’ll find a bunch of advanced tools that go way beyond what you get in the regular Instagram app. We’re talking green screen replacements, AI-powered animations from still images, subject cutouts, and even built-in project tracking and performance data.
If you’ve used CapCut before, this will all sound pretty familiar, and that’s not a coincidence. Edits was first teased back in January, around the same time TikTok and CapCut briefly vanished from U.S. app stores. Meta clearly sees ByteDance’s CapCut as the one to beat.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has admitted there’s overlap but says Edits is aimed more at dedicated creators than casual users. On Threads, he mentioned that while the app might start similarly to CapCut, it’s expected to branch out with a wider creative toolkit and likely won’t chase the same massive audience.

More Features Incoming
Looking ahead, Instagram is already hinting at some future upgrades: think keyframe animation support, even more AI editing tricks, and collaboration tools so multiple creators can work on the same video.
If you’re into content creation and tired of juggling multiple apps, Edits might be worth a spin. It’s got potential, and it’s clearly built to keep Instagram creators editing inside the Meta ecosystem.
You can download the app for free from the App Store for iOS, and Google Play for Android.
