Meta’s latest app, Instagram Edits, is off to a flying start. In just its first week, the new video editing app has pulled in over 7.1 million downloads across iOS and Android, beating the early momentum of ByteDance’s CapCut.

According to data from Appfigures, and first picked up by TechCrucnch, Edits was downloaded an estimated 702,900 times on iOS within its first two days. For comparison, CapCut only managed about 83,500 downloads combined across iOS and Android during its first three days back in 2020.

Even factoring in CapCut’s initially limited market availability, the difference is hard to ignore and Meta’s advantage through Instagram’s ecosystem is clearly showing.

Explosive Growth in the U.S. Market

The U.S. launch numbers tell an even bigger story. Edits picked up 381,000 downloads in its first three days stateside, while CapCut only had 3,400 during its U.S. debut. That’s a 112x bigger launch for Edits, highlighting the strength of Meta’s network to drive early adoption.

Thanks to this surge, Instagram Edits shot straight to #1 on the U.S. iPhone App Store on April 22, topping both the overall and non-game app charts. It stayed near the top for several days before slipping slightly to #2 and then #3 by the end of the week. In comparison, CapCut ranked #14 overall after its first three days.

A Strong Debut, But the Real Challenge Lies Ahead

While Instagram Edits is making headlines now, CapCut’s long-term success still sets a high bar. Since its launch in 2020, CapCut has been downloaded over 1.22 billion times worldwide (excluding China). It’s a reminder that while early downloads are a strong start, keeping users engaged over time is the real challenge.

Still, if Instagram Edits can maintain its momentum, Meta may finally have a serious rival to TikTok’s editing empire, and it all started with a record-breaking week.
