WhatsApp is rolling out a new update that lets you translate messages without leaving the app. Until now, iPhone users had to rely on Apple’s Translate feature, while everyone else copy-pasted into Google Translate.
Now, translation is built directly into WhatsApp, and Android users even get an exclusive bonus.
How to Translate Messages in WhatsApp
Using the new tool is simple:
- Long-press any received message.
- Select the new Translate option from the context menu.
- Choose the language you want, or download your preferred ones for offline use.
All translations happen on-device rather than in the cloud, which means faster performance and more privacy since WhatsApp itself doesn’t see your texts.
Auto-Translation: An Android-Only Perk
While iPhone users will have to translate one message at a time, Android users get a big upgrade: the ability to turn on automatic translation for entire conversations. Once enabled, new incoming messages in that thread will be translated instantly.
At launch, iOS supports Apple’s 21 languages, while Android starts with just six (English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic). Still, the auto-translate feature gives Android the edge in usability.
The 404 Take
This isn’t just about convenience, it’s about reach. WhatsApp is already dominant worldwide, but in the US, it’s still fighting to gain traction.
Built-in translation could make it more appealing to bilingual families, international students, and global work chats. Honestly, it’s surprising this feature didn’t arrive years ago.
