Apple is reportedly reviving its solid-state button project for future iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch models. The tech, once paused, is back under active development as part of Project Bongo.

Apple Solid-State Buttons May Return Across Product Line

Apple is once again working on solid-state buttons with haptic feedback for its devices, not just for the iPhone, but for the iPad and Apple Watch as well. According to a new report from Chinese leaker Instant Digital, Apple’s previously shelved “Project Bongo” is back on the table.

Solid-state buttons are designed to replace physical, clickable buttons with non-moving surfaces that use haptic feedback to simulate touch. This tech can offer better durability and new interaction options, like recognizing the difference between a light tap and a firm press.

Why Was It Delayed?

Apple first planned to introduce this feature in the iPhone 15 Pro, but later dropped it due to concerns about mistouches and reliability. The solid-state buttons didn’t always register input correctly, and users had no physical “click” as feedback.

Now, Apple is trying again, with a focus on improving how these buttons feel. The current prototype places them directly in the device frame and uses haptics to simulate clicks.

What’s Next?

Even though iPhone 17 isn’t expected to include these new buttons, it’s clear Apple sees potential here. The tech isn’t being held back by cost, but by the need for perfect touch accuracy and realistic button feel. I have a feeling we might see this tech debut in 2027 with the 20th Anniversary iPhone with its reportedly intricate design.

With this revival of Project Bongo, it looks like solid-state buttons could be a key part of Apple’s future device designs, not just for phones, but for iPads and Apple Watches too.
