Apple’s foldable iPhone plans might not stop at just one device. In the latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is currently exploring the idea of a smaller, clamshell-style foldable iPhone, similar in concept to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip.
This would not be Apple’s first foldable, but rather a potential follow-up shape if the first model succeeds.
An “iPhone Flip” is being discussed internally

The clamshell idea has floated around before. Apple has been known to have tested some prototypes back in 2024
Ultimately, Apple’s larger tablet-style foldable is the one expected to debut first, likely later this year.
But now, Gurman says the flip-style form factor is back under consideration. He notes that Apple is looking at a square, clamshell foldable phone inside its labs, though it is still very early and far from guaranteed to ever ship.
The thinking seems straightforward: if Apple’s first foldable iPhone creates real demand, the company could expand the lineup with more shapes and sizes, much like it does today with standard iPhones.
Gurman also reiterates that Apple continues to explore other foldable concepts too, including book-style devices and even a much larger foldable iPad that could reportedly reach an eye-watering price point.
For now, there is no release timeline attached to a flip iPhone, but it is interesting to hear Apple may already be planning beyond its first foldable debut.
