If you’ve ever opened WhatsApp Web and wondered why something as basic as group calling was missing, you’re not alone. For years, voice and video calls were limited to WhatsApp’s mobile and desktop apps, leaving the web version feeling oddly incomplete.
That’s about to change.
According to a new report from WABetaInfo, Meta is actively developing voice and video call support for group chats on WhatsApp Web. The feature is currently marked as “under development” and isn’t live for beta testers yet, but its arrival now looks inevitable.
Group calls, straight from your browser
Once rolled out, WhatsApp Web users will be able to join group voice and video calls directly from a browser, no app installation required. This brings the web client much closer to feature parity with WhatsApp on iOS, Android, and desktop.

This upgrade is especially useful for people using shared or work computers, where installing apps isn’t always allowed. Instead of switching devices mid-conversation, users will be able to stay in group calls directly from Chrome, Safari, or other supported browsers.
WABetaInfo notes that WhatsApp had previously hinted at web-based calling, but group support was extremely limited at the time. The current development effort appears focused on making group calls fully functional and reliable across devices.
How many people can join?
Early signs suggest WhatsApp Web group calls could eventually support up to 32 participants, matching the current limits on mobile. That said, Meta may start with a smaller cap, possibly eight or 16 users, while the feature is refined before a wider release.
This staged rollout approach would be consistent with how WhatsApp typically introduces major calling features.
More calling tools are in the works
Group calling itself is only part of the story. WhatsApp is also testing several supporting features for its web client, including:
- Incoming call notifications while using WhatsApp Web
- Shareable call links for quick group access
- Scheduled calls with a name and description
These additions would make WhatsApp Web far more practical for meetings, study groups, and casual catch-ups, especially in professional or collaborative environments.
When will it launch?
There’s no official release date yet. Since the feature isn’t available to beta testers, it may still be a few development cycles away. Still, the fact that Meta is actively building and expanding group calling support suggests a broader rollout is on the horizon.
When it arrives, WhatsApp Web will no longer feel like a companion experience. Instead, it’ll be a fully capable communication platform in its own right.
