OpenAI has just dropped a new feature that might change the way you shop online — Instant Checkout in ChatGPT.

Instead of bouncing between apps or browser tabs, you can now buy things from Etsy and Shopify merchants directly inside ChatGPT.

How Instant Checkout Works

When you search for something in ChatGPT, products that are available through Etsy or Shopify may show up with a “Buy” button. Tap it, and you can complete the purchase right there without leaving the chat.

The system uses Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol to handle payments, so if you’ve got a card on file (or prefer another payment option), you’re good to go.

A few details worth noting:

  • It’s currently limited to single-item purchases. Multi-item carts are “coming soon.”
  • Available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users in the U.S.
  • Merchants can apply to support Instant Checkout, and yes — they pay a small fee per sale.
  • When multiple merchants sell the same item, ChatGPT factors in availability, price, and quality, not just whether Instant Checkout is enabled.

What It Means for Shoppers and Sellers

For users, this could mean less time clicking around and more time getting what you need instantly. Imagine asking ChatGPT for a gift idea and buying it in the same chat thread.

For merchants, especially smaller Etsy and Shopify sellers, this could be a new way to reach people who spend a lot of time inside ChatGPT already.

Extra Features in the Same Update

Alongside Instant Checkout, OpenAI also rolled out:

  • Parental Controls – parents can manage settings like usage times, voice mode, memory, and image generation.
  • Teen Safety Tools – ChatGPT will better recognize if a teen is showing signs of distress and escalate to parents if necessary.

The Bottom Line

It’s still early days for ChatGPT shopping, but this move shows how AI chat tools are evolving beyond just answering questions — they’re becoming platforms where you can actually get things done. Instant Checkout is starting with Etsy and Shopify, but OpenAI says more merchants and regions are on the way.
