OpenAI has officially taken the wraps off GPT-5, its next-gen AI model powering ChatGPT, and it’s being rolled out starting today for users across free and paid plans.

Here’s what OpenAI says about the upgrade:

“Today we’re introducing GPT-5, OpenAI’s smartest, fastest, most useful model yet, and a major step towards placing intelligence at the center of every business.”

What is GPT-5?

GPT-5 isn’t just a new model, it’s a unified system that bundles together OpenAI’s recent advancements, including those from the GPT-4o and o-series. It’s designed to handle simple tasks quickly while applying deep reasoning for complex ones, thanks to a smart internal real-time router.

“GPT-5 is a unified system with a smart, efficient model that answers most questions, a deeper reasoning model (GPT-5 thinking) for harder problems, and a real‑time router that quickly decides which to use.”

You can even guide the AI’s approach by saying things like “think hard about this” in your prompt.

Faster, Smarter, and Less Hallucination-y

According to OpenAI, GPT-5 outperforms earlier models in major areas:

“GPT‑5 is significantly less likely to hallucinate than our previous models.”

It boasts:

  • Up to 80% fewer factual errors than OpenAI o3 (when using reasoning)
  • Dramatically improved visual reasoning and scientific problem solving
  • More efficient responses using 50–80% fewer tokens

Available Now, But With a Twist

GPT-5 is now the default model in ChatGPT for all signed-in users, replacing GPT-4o and earlier versions. Free-tier users will get a “mini” GPT-5 version after hitting usage limits, while paid users (Plus, Pro, and Team) get full access now.

“GPT-5 is the new default in ChatGPT […] Just open ChatGPT and type your question; GPT-5 handles the rest.”

Users can now choose from four distinct personalities for GPT-5: Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd. These optional settings allow you to customize how ChatGPT responds and engages in conversations.

Enterprise and EDU customers will get it next week, along with GPT-5 Pro, a version with extended reasoning designed for more reliable and detailed answers.
