Tesla has completed its first fully autonomous delivery of a Model Y with no driver, and no remote help.
Tesla Just Completed Its First-Ever Delivery Where The Vehicle Drove Itself to the Customer
CEO Elon Musk had promised this milestone for June 28, but in typical Elon fashion, it happened early, June 27, to be exact. The vehicle left Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin and made its way through highways, suburbs, and local roads all the way to a customer’s apartment complex.
“There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!” — Elon Musk on X
A Big Step, But Not the First
While Tesla’s achievement is impressive, it isn’t exactly the first of its kind. Google’s Waymo has been running fully driverless rides — even on highways — for employees in cities like Phoenix and LA. Still, those aren’t available to the public (yet), and they usually involve some pretty tight operational boundaries.
Why This Delivery Matters
Tesla’s video shows a real-world, practical use of Full Self-Driving (FSD): not just giving rides, but delivering cars. This shows progress toward Musk’s long-promised robotaxi fleet and unsupervised driving capabilities.
Of course, we’ve seen Tesla’s FSD stumble in its robotaxi tests, so this success comes with cautious optimism.
