A fresh trademark filing hints that Apple could introduce a new smart home operating system, homeOS, at this year’s WWDC.
homeOS Could Offer A Sneak-Peek At Apple’s Rumored Smart Home Hub With An iPad-Like Screen
Apple’s annual WWDC event is just around the corner, and while we’re all expecting the usual iOS, macOS, and watchOS updates, there might be something entirely new on the way: homeOS.
As spotted by 9to5Mac, Apple may be preparing to unveil a new smart home operating system. The clue? A trademark filing for the term “homeOS” was recently submitted on April 16, 2025, by a mysterious entity called “Home Operations Suite LLC.”
That name sounds generic, but the filing’s categories; “Computer & Software Products” and “Computer & Software Services,” and the timing suggest Apple is likely behind it.
This isn’t just a shot in the dark. The filing was first discovered by Parker Ortolani and has sparked real excitement across the Apple community. And with WWDC being Apple’s go-to stage for software reveals (and sometimes hardware), the signs are pointing to a possible reveal.
So What Are We Expecting?
There are two big theories right now as suggested by 9to5Mac:
- homeOS as the software behind a new “HomePad” – a rumored smart home device from Apple. This would be a major spotlight moment if the HomePad launches solo at WWDC.
- homeOS as a rebrand of existing platforms like tvOS or the software used in HomePod devices. Even without new hardware, Apple could showcase homeOS features coming to Apple TV 4K or HomePod mini, giving developers an early look.
Apple has a history of using WWDC for sneak peeks at its ecosystem’s future. Remember, the Vision Pro and the original HomePod were both revealed there. Whether homeOS arrives as a rebrand or alongside brand-new hardware, WWDC 2025 could mark a major shift in how Apple approaches the smart home.
WWDC kicks off next week. Keep your eyes peeled, Apple’s smart home strategy might be about to level up.
