Apple is officially launching macOS 26 at WWDC 2025 on June 9, bringing a fresh visionOS-inspired design and new Apple Intelligence features, but older Intel Macs are expected to lose support, making this a major shift for Mac users.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- macOS 26 to be revealed at WWDC on June 9
- VisionOS-style UI and new Apple Intelligence features
- Older Intel Macs like 2018 MacBook Pro likely dropped
- First dev beta expected to be over 17GB
- iOS 26 and macOS 26 launch together under new naming system
- OS name (e.g. “macOS Redwood” or “macOS Diablo”) to be revealed at WWDC
This will be the first macOS version under Apple’s new naming system that uses the release year instead of a version number. So instead of macOS 16, we’re getting macOS 26, launching alongside iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and more.
Which Macs Will Support macOS 26?
According to AppleInsider, only these Mac models are confirmed to support the upcoming update:
- MacBook Pro (2019 and later)
- MacBook Air (M1 and later)
- iMac (2020 and later)
- Mac mini (M1 and later)
- Mac Pro (2019 and later)
- All Mac Studio models
Macs like the 2018 MacBook Pro, 2017 iMac Pro, and 2020 Intel MacBook Air, which still support macOS Sequoia, may be left behind.
What to Expect from macOS 26
macOS 26 is expected to offer a more modern interface, similar to what we’ve seen on visionOS, along with smarter features powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple also seems to be focusing on M-series Macs, which are more optimized for these advanced features.
The operating system is currently code-named “Cheer”, but Apple will likely give it a California-inspired name during the keynote. Possibilities include macOS Redwood, Skyline, or Diablo, based on Apple’s trademarks.
