Apple’s HomePod-iPad Hybrid Smart Home Hub Could Be Released This Year With Apple Intelligence, and More

After years of speculation and internal delays, Apple’s long-awaited smart home hub might finally see the light of day by the end of this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Originally expected this spring, the launch was pushed due to setbacks with Apple Intelligence and Siri’s next-gen capabilities. But things may be back on track now, with the device reportedly in internal testing with Apple employees.

Some Features We Know About

Rumored to look like a squared-off iPad mini, this 7-inch display device is designed as a HomeKit and Siri command center. Here’s what’s likely on board:

  • A new, custom-built “homeOS”
  • Apple Intelligence support for smarter automation
  • FaceTime-ready camera at the top
  • Rechargeable battery for flexibility
  • App support, including StandBy-like dashboard widgets

It’s built with smart home control in mind—think light switches, climate, and door locks—but with a broader focus on Apple services and communication.

Why the Delay?

A big part of the delay stemmed from Apple’s behind-the-scenes struggles with AI integration, specifically around Siri and App Intents that were supposed to roll out in iOS 18.4. Those plans were shelved for now, with Apple admitting new Siri features will instead arrive sometime in 2025.

Still, internal testing continues, and Apple appears to be putting serious weight behind getting this product out before year’s end.

A Peek at Apple’s More Ambitious Robotic Display

Beyond the smart hub, Apple is also working on a robotic smart display with a movable arm and a “unique AI personality.” Think next-level assistant. Gurman says it’s a “major priority” for Apple, but the launch is likely pushed to 2026 or later.

Interestingly, some advanced features had to be scrapped to meet the timeline—but might return in future versions.

Final Thoughts

If this homeOS device really does ship by late 2025, it would be Apple’s first big new hardware category since the Vision Pro. It’s a strategic move, especially as smart home competition heats up. And who knows? If the robotic version is just around the corner, Siri might finally start living up to its promise.
