Google Maps has a new AI-powered trick for iPhone users; it can now identify locations from your screenshots and help you get directions instantly.

No More Typing, Just Screenshot and Go

Ever taken a screenshot of a cool cafe on Instagram or a scenic spot from a TikTok video, only to forget where it actually is? Google Maps has just made your life a lot easier.

Google is rolling out a new feature for iPhones in the U.S. that allows Maps to detect location details from your saved screenshots. This means Google Maps can scan your photo library, recognize place names or landmarks in images, and directly offer directions, no typing required.

Here’s How It Works

Once the feature is enabled, Google Maps will scan your camera roll for screenshots with recognizable location info. These are gathered into a new “Screenshots” tab under the “You” section of the app.

From there, you can:

  • View the screenshots Google found with location data.
  • Tap on any image to see a suggested place or address.
  • Quickly get directions or save the location to your lists.
  • Manually add or remove screenshots from the tab.
  • Toggle the feature off at any time using the button at the bottom of the carousel.

All this is powered by Google’s Gemini AI, which does the behind-the-scenes recognition work.

Is It Available for Everyone?

Right now, this feature is only rolling out in the U.S. for iPhone users. Android users will need to wait a bit longer, as Google hasn’t confirmed a rollout date for other platforms.

Also, it’s worth noting that this update might not show up immediately for all users as it’s a gradual rollout.

What About Apple Maps?

While Apple Maps continues to improve, Google is clearly ahead in integrating helpful AI features like this one. If you’re someone who often uses screenshots as bookmarks for places you want to visit, this could be the reason you stick with or switch to Google Maps on your iPhone.

A Small But Smart Addition

This might seem like a small addition, but it’s a smart quality-of-life feature that saves time and effort. If you’re in the U.S. and use Google Maps on your iPhone, it’s worth checking if this feature is available, and turning it on if it is.
