Gamers, grab your patience hats, we’re going to Vice City, just not as soon as we hoped.
Rockstar Games has officially pushed back the release date of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026. The game was originally scheduled for a Fall 2025 launch, but the developer says the team needs additional time “to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
In a statement posted on its website, Rockstar thanked fans for their excitement and apologized for the delay:
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team… We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
What We Know About GTA VI So Far
The game’s first official trailer dropped in December 2023 and broke viewership records. Since then, Rockstar has kept things mostly under wraps, aside from teasing that GTA VI will be set in a modern-day Vice City and feature the franchise’s first female lead character, Lucia. The storyline is said to draw inspiration from the infamous Bonnie and Clyde duo. You can expect heists, chaos, and, of course, a lot of neon.

While the delay is disappointing, Rockstar’s track record of quality (and GTA V’s ongoing popularity 11 years later) suggests the extra wait might be worth it.
What’s Next?
Parent company, Take-Two Interactive, is set to report its next financial results on May 15, and we may hear more about the delay then. The company’s stock took a hit following the news, dropping 8% in premarket NASDAQ trading.
Until then, keep an eye out, and maybe replay GTA V again for old times’ sake.
