Apple’s newest budget laptop has an unusual name by Mac standards. Instead of sticking with familiar branding like MacBook or MacBook Air, the company introduced its $599 model as the MacBook Neo.
Now Apple has explained the thinking behind that decision.
In an interview reported by TechRadar, Apple’s Director of Mac Product Marketing Colleen Novielli said the company wanted a name that reflected the personality of the device.
“We wanted something that felt fun and friendly, and fresh, and felt like it really suited the spirit of this product,” Novielli said shortly after the launch event.
The idea behind the ‘Neo’ name
Apple considered several naming options before settling on Neo, but the goal was clear from the start: create a name that felt different from the rest of the Mac lineup.
The word Neo literally means new, and Apple appears to be using it to signal a fresh direction for the Mac. Unlike the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, the Neo is designed to feel more playful and approachable.

That approach is reflected in the laptop’s design as well. The MacBook Neo comes in four colors including Silver, Indigo, Blush, and Citrus, giving it a brighter look compared with Apple’s more traditional MacBook finishes.

The result is a name that immediately separates the device from the rest of Apple’s laptops.
A name that stands apart in Apple’s lineup
Apple has historically used very straightforward naming for Macs. Models like MacBook Air and MacBook Pro describe their role in the lineup rather than adopting creative branding.
The MacBook Neo breaks that pattern.

By choosing a distinct name, Apple clearly wants the laptop to stand apart as something new in the Mac family. It also raises an interesting question about the future of Apple’s naming strategy.
Could the company eventually introduce other “Neo” products?
When asked about the possibility of something like an iPad Neo or iPhone Neo, Novielli acknowledged the idea but declined to comment.
For now, the MacBook Neo remains the only Apple product with the name. But it shows Apple is willing to experiment with branding when launching a completely new kind of Mac.
