Verizon has finally explained what caused its widespread service outage, and the company says it was not a cybersecurity incident.

According to a statement shared with Mashable, Verizon confirmed the disruption stemmed from a software issue.

The carrier says it is now conducting a full internal review to understand what went wrong, but emphasized that there is currently no evidence pointing to a hack, data breach, or other security-related event.

“This was a software issue and we are conducting a full review of what happened. As of now, there is no indication that this was a cyber security issue,” the telecom giant said in a statement sent to Mashable.

During the outage itself, Verizon offered little detail, focusing instead on restoring service as quickly as possible. At the time, the company said its teams were actively working to bring the network back online, without specifying where or what systems were affected.

For hours, many customers were left unable to make calls, send texts, or use mobile data, with phones showing the familiar “SOS” indicator.

The morning after service was restored, Verizon issued a public apology and announced a $20 credit for affected customers as a goodwill gesture. While that offer helped ease some frustration, questions around the root cause lingered until this clarification.

For now, Verizon maintains that the issue was purely technical and isolated to software. More details may emerge as the company completes its review, but customers can at least rule out a cybersecurity breach as the source of the outage.
