Ever had a song hit so hard you immediately needed to know the backstory?
Spotify is testing a new feature called “About the Song”, and it does exactly that. It adds contextual story cards directly into your listening experience, so you can learn more about the track while it’s playing.
It’s currently in beta and rolling out to select Premium users in six countries.
What is Spotify’s about the song feature?
About the Song introduces swappable information cards inside the Now Playing View in the Spotify app.
When available, you’ll see a dedicated card that:
- Summarizes the story or inspiration behind the track
- Pulls context from third-party publications like Variety and TIME
- Gives deeper insight into the artist’s creative process
Spotify says the goal is simple: strengthen your connection to the music by giving you more context about what you’re hearing.
In Spotify’s words:
“Music fans know the feeling: A song stops you in your tracks, and you immediately want to know more. What inspired it, and what’s the meaning behind it? We believe that understanding the craft and context behind a song can deepen your connection to the music you love.”
This feels like Spotify leaning harder into music discovery, but from a storytelling angle rather than just algorithmic recommendations.

The feature is currently:

Not everyone will see it yet. Spotify appears to be testing it gradually before a wider rollout.
How to check if you have It
Want to see if you’ve got access?
- Open Spotify.
- Play a supported song.
- Go to the Now Playing View.
- Scroll down.
If the feature is enabled on your account, you’ll see the About the Song card.
There are also thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons included, which allow users to give feedback on the summaries. That suggests Spotify is actively training and refining how this feature works.
