Google is expanding cross-platform file sharing by bringing AirDrop compatibility to the Pixel 9 lineup.

Quick Share with AirDrop interoperability is rolling out over the next few days to:

  • Pixel 9 Pro
  • Pixel 9 Pro XL
  • Pixel 9 Pro Fold

In commuity post, Google said:

Starting today, we are bringing Quick Share compatibility with AirDrop® to the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold! The feature will roll out over the coming weeks in phases.

Previously, the feature was limited to the newer Pixel 10 series.

How Pixel to iPhone AirDrop transfers work

Android To Iphone Airdrop

With AirDrop interoperability enabled, Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 devices can transfer files directly to:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Mac

The experience mirrors Apple-to-Apple AirDrop transfers:

  • No internet connection required
  • Direct peer-to-peer connection
  • Standard AirDrop notification on Apple devices
  • Files saved automatically to the appropriate app (Photos or Files)

To receive a file from a Pixel, Apple users must set AirDrop visibility to “Everyone for 10 Minutes.” Once enabled, the incoming file appears identical to a traditional AirDrop request.

Sending files from iPhone to Pixel

File transfers also work in the opposite direction.

To receive files from an Apple device, Pixel users must either:

  • Enable “Everyone for 10 minutes,” or
  • Enter Receive mode within Quick Share

Incoming files are saved in the Files app on the Pixel device.

Security and privacy protections

Google says the interoperability feature uses a multi-layered security model:

  • Encrypted peer-to-peer connection
  • No server routing of data
  • Built-in Android and iOS platform protections
  • Explicit consent required before file acceptance
  • Visible device names for sender verification

All transfers are direct, ensuring data never passes through external servers.

A major cross-platform step

AirDrop has long been exclusive to Apple’s ecosystem. With Quick Share interoperability expanding beyond Pixel 10 to the Pixel 9 lineup, Android-to-iPhone file transfers become significantly more seamless.

It represents one of the most notable cross-platform integrations between Android and Apple devices to date.
