OpenAI is making a bigger push into developer tools, and today it introduced something new for Mac users: a dedicated Codex Mac app.

The company says Codex is “the best way to build with agents,” and this new macOS release is designed to give developers a focused hub for agent-powered coding workflows, right alongside their IDE and Terminal.

In other words, OpenAI wants Codex to feel less like a feature and more like a full workspace.

Codex gets its own Mac app

OpenAI already has macOS apps for ChatGPT and Atlas, but Codex is a bit different. This one is built specifically for what OpenAI calls agentic coding, where multiple AI agents can work on tasks in parallel.

The Codex Mac app acts as a central place to manage those agents, review their work, and keep projects organized without bouncing between tools.

OpenAI describes it as a way to multitask with agents more naturally, with each task running in its own dedicated thread.

What the Codex app can do

OpenAI shared a few key features that stand out, especially for developers working across multiple projects.

Agents run in separate project threads

Codex organizes agents by project, so you can switch between tasks without losing context. Each thread keeps track of what the agent changed and why.

You can:

  • Review edits directly inside the app
  • Comment on code diffs
  • Open changes in your editor for manual tweaks

Built-in worktree support

This is a big one for anyone who uses Git seriously.

Codex includes support for worktrees, meaning multiple agents can work on the same repo at the same time without stepping on each other.

Each agent works in an isolated copy of your code, letting you explore different approaches without messing up your local branch.

Seamless integration with existing Codex tools

If you’ve already used Codex through the CLI or IDE extension, the Mac app pulls in your existing session history and configuration automatically.

So you can install it and jump right back into your current workflow.

Limited-time access boost for launch

To celebrate the release, OpenAI is expanding Codex availability:

  • Codex is now available for ChatGPT Free and Go users
  • Rate limits are temporarily doubled for:
    • Plus
    • Pro
    • Business
    • Enterprise
    • Edu

So if you’ve been curious about Codex, this is probably the easiest moment to try it.

This launch feels like OpenAI signaling that AI coding agents are moving from “cool demo” territory into real everyday developer tooling.

A dedicated Mac app suggests OpenAI sees Codex as more than just a feature inside ChatGPT. It’s becoming its own platform for building with agents.

And if the workflow is as smooth as advertised, this could end up being one of the most interesting Mac developer apps to land this year.
