Netflix has quietly removed the ability to cast shows and movies from phones to most TVs, leaving many users surprised as the feature disappears after app updates.

The change was first spotted on Netflix’s updated support page, which now confirms that mobile casting is no longer supported for the majority of devices.

A Sudden Removal That Many Users Didn’t Expect

According to user reports, the removal started rolling out in the last few weeks. One Reddit post claims casting support was removed on November 10 with no advance notice. Some users say casting still worked on older versions of the Netflix app, but the option disappeared completely after updating to the latest version.

Netflix’s updated help page now directs users to open the Netflix app using the remote that came with their TV instead of casting from their phones.

Casting Still Works, But Only For a Few Users

The feature is not gone entirely, although the remaining support is extremely limited. Netflix says casting still works on older Chromecast devices or TVs that have Google Cast built in.

However, there is another restriction. Only subscribers on Netflix’s ad-free plans can use casting on these legacy devices. These plans start at $17.99 per month.

Users with the cheaper $7.99 ad-supported tier cannot cast at all, even if they own older Chromecast hardware.

No Explanation From Netflix Yet

Netflix has not explained why it removed mobile casting support. The change also echoes a similar decision from 2019 when the company ended Apple AirPlay support due to concerns about controlling the viewing experience.

Netflix has been contacted for comment, but no official reason has been shared at the time of writing.
