Apple has expanded its Messages via satellite feature to iPhone users in Japan.

The feature is available on iPhone 14 and later models and the Apple Watch Ultra 3, allowing users to send messages even when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection. This marks another step in Apple’s effort to provide reliable connectivity in remote areas.

How Messages via Satellite Works

When users attempt to send a message without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, the device will prompt them to connect to the nearest satellite. Once connected, they can send iMessages, SMS messages, emoji, and even use Tapback reactions, just as they would on a regular network.

Japan iPhone Messages Via Satellite Connected

Apple has made sure that messages sent via satellite remain end-to-end encrypted, keeping your conversations private even in areas with no other connectivity options.

Building a Satellite Toolkit

This addition complements Japan’s existing satellite-based features, including Emergency SOS via satellite and location sharing through Find My.

With Messages via satellite, Apple users in Japan can now stay in touch with friends, family, or colleagues even in off-grid locations, making remote work, travel, or outdoor adventures safer and more convenient.

Device Requirements and Accessibility

To use the feature, iPhone users need iOS 18 or later, while Apple Watch Ultra 3 owners require watchOS 26 or later. Apple confirms that the service is free for all supported devices, which means there are no additional costs for using Messages via satellite. This makes it a practical tool for anyone living in or visiting areas where traditional connectivity can be unreliable.

Why It Matters

With the growing importance of connectivity for communication and safety, Apple’s satellite messaging expands what we expect from smartphones and wearable devices. While Emergency SOS and location sharing help in critical situations, Messages via satellite ensures that everyday conversations are not completely disrupted by a lack of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

Apple continues to push the boundaries of accessibility and connectivity, giving users confidence that their devices can stay connected even in challenging conditions. Japan now joins other regions benefiting from Apple’s satellite features, making it one of the most connected countries for users on the go.
