Apple has officially announced the M5 MacBook Air, the next-generation update to its popular ultraportable laptop.
The new MacBook Air brings double the base storage, faster SSD performance, improved connectivity, and a more powerful charger while maintaining the same sleek, lightweight design that has made it a favorite among students and professionals alike.
Pricing and availability
The M5 MacBook Air starts at $1,099 for the base 512GB model, up from $999 with the M4 MacBook Air. The higher-end configurations now offer up to 4TB of storage, doubling the top-tier option of the previous generation.
Pre-orders for the M5 MacBook Air open on Wednesday, March 4, with shipments starting a week later on Wednesday, March 11.
Apple continues to offer both 13-inch and 15-inch models, with four color options: Sky Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Silver.
Major upgrades in the M5 MacBook Air
1. Double the storage and faster SSD
The M5 MacBook Air now comes standard with 512GB of SSD storage, twice the previous base. Top-tier configurations reach 4TB, making it ideal for creative professionals and power users. Apple also improved SSD speeds for faster file transfers and app launches.
2. Next-generation M5 chip
The new M5 chip delivers a faster CPU, next-generation GPU, and a Neural Accelerator in each core, enhancing machine learning and AI capabilities. This makes the M5 MacBook Air more capable of handling demanding tasks like photo and video editing, coding, and AI workflows.
3. Connectivity upgrades: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6
The M5 MacBook Air replaces Wi-Fi 6E with Wi-Fi 7, offering higher wireless speeds and more reliable connections in crowded networks. Bluetooth is also upgraded to Bluetooth 6, improving device pairing and performance.
4. Enhanced charger
Apple now bundles the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max in all M5 MacBook Air models, replacing the older 30W and 35W options. This allows for faster charging, with the ability to reach 50% battery in 30 minutes when paired with the optional 70W adapter.
Retained features
Despite the upgrades, Apple has retained the beloved features of the MacBook Air:
- Aluminum unibody design with thin, lightweight build
- Liquid Retina display with 500 nits brightness and P3 wide color
- 12MP Center Stage webcam
- Up to 18 hours of battery life
- Two Thunderbolt 4 ports supporting up to two external displays
- Immersive sound system with Spatial Audio
Is it worth upgrading?
The M5 MacBook Air is clearly a significant improvement over the M4, especially with double storage, Wi-Fi 7, and faster SSD speeds. For students, creative professionals, or anyone looking for a long-lasting, portable Mac, the M5 Air offers excellent value.
Those satisfied with the M4 MacBook Air may not need to upgrade immediately, but the M5 Air is particularly attractive for users who require more storage or faster performance for modern workloads.
