Apple’s new iPhone Air is all about being thin and light, but iFixit’s latest teardown has revealed a curious twist.
The brand-new iPhone Air MagSafe Battery Pack, an accessory built exclusively for the Air, appears to be running on the exact same battery as the phone itself.
Same Battery, Different Job
According to iFixit, the MagSafe pack contains a 12.26Wh battery that’s just 2.72mm thick, thin enough to fit inside the ultra-slim 5.6mm iPhone Air.
Side-by-side comparisons make it look almost identical to the battery Apple showed off when it unveiled the phone.

That means, at least on paper, your iPhone Air and its charging accessory are powered by the same heart. Pretty wild.

The Catch With Charging
Here’s the downside: even though the pack uses the same battery, it can only charge an iPhone Air up to about 65%. The reason is simple — wireless charging isn’t perfectly efficient. Energy gets lost in the transfer, and that means you’re not getting the full capacity.

The pack is also thicker than the iPhone Air itself. Unlike the titanium-framed phone, the battery is wrapped in plastic, and iFixit says this added bulk was probably the minimum needed to make the product viable at all.
A Stylish Yet Limited Accessory
It’s clever of Apple to reuse the same battery design, but it highlights the trade-offs of wireless charging. You’re essentially carrying around a second iPhone Air battery… one that can’t even top off your phone fully.

If matching Apple-designed gear is your priority, this pack will look the part. But if you want maximum battery backup, you might find better value in third-party options that deliver more power for less money.
