Apple analyst Jeff Pu now expects the iPhone 17 base model to include an A19 chip, reversing earlier A18 claims. Conflicting rumors remain for iPhone 17 Air and Pro chips.

iPhone 17 Will Not Get The A18 Chip from Last Year’s iPhone 16, And Will Feature A New A19 Chip

According to a new investor note from Pu seen by MacRumors, the base model iPhone 17 is now expected to feature the A19 chip, not the A18 as previously claimed.

This marks a clear reversal from Pu’s earlier predictions made a few months ago. Now, Pu says the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and Pro Max will all come equipped with A-series chips from the A19 family, with varying levels of performance.

Specifically:

  • iPhone 17: A19 chip
  • iPhone 17 Air: A19 chip
  • iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max: A19 Pro chip

However, there’s still disagreement in the rumor mill. A Weibo leaker known as Fixed Focus Digital recently claimed the iPhone 17 Air will get the A19 Pro, the same chip as the Pro models, but with a key difference. According to that source, this A19 Pro will have a 5-core GPU, versus a 6-core GPU in the Pro and Pro Max.

Final Thoughts

So, while the iPhone 17 series appears to be leveling up across the board in terms of chip performance, the exact breakdown is still under debate. One thing’s for sure, Apple is blurring the lines between its standard and premium models more than ever.

With just two months to go before Apple’s September event, we’ll know soon enough how these rumors pan out. For now, the A19 chip is back on the table, and that’s big news for iPhone 17 buyers.
