Apple is reportedly testing new Purple and Green colors for the iPhone 17 base model, possibly replacing one of the existing options.

Apple Might Freshen Up the iPhone 17 Color Palette

According to a leak from Majin Bu, a known (but occasionally hit-or-miss) Apple tipster, Apple is experimenting with two new color options for the iPhone 17: Green and Purple. However, only one of them may make it to launch, with Purple currently the stronger candidate.

This could be a welcome change for users tired of the current iPhone 16 color lineup, which includes Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White, and Black. If Purple does launch, it will likely replace one of these, adding variety to Apple’s annual refresh.

iPhone 17 Specs: What’s New Under the Hood?

Beyond the color changes, the iPhone 17 base model looks like a modest update over the iPhone 16. Here’s what the leaks and analysts suggest so far:

  • Chipset: Same A18 chip found in the iPhone 16, built using TSMC’s 3nm N3E process
  • RAM: 8GB, matching the iPhone 16
  • Display: Slightly larger at 6.3 inches (up from 6.1 inches)
  • Refresh Rate: 120Hz panel expected, up from the 60Hz panel in the iPhone 16 (No ProMotion)
  • Front Camera: A new 24MP camera, doubling the resolution from the 12MP in current models

These improvements may not seem dramatic, but the upgraded display and camera will likely be big selling points, at least from Apple’s perspective.

The 8GB RAM and the A18 combo from last year’s iPhone 16 though is a bummer, but maybe, just maybe, the new color options could keep things interesting. Of course nothing is final for now.

Expected Release and Final Thoughts

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025, sticking to its usual release schedule. While the hardware changes may feel incremental, the rumored Purple color option could generate excitement among iPhone fans looking for a fresh aesthetic.

Whether Green or Purple wins out, it’s clear Apple is still experimenting with color to keep things visually interesting, especially for its entry-level iPhones.
