iPhone 17 Base Model: Modest Expectations

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 base model is anticipated to bring incremental improvements over the iPhone 16. According to a latest note by analyst Jeff Pu, which was picked up by MacRumors, the device will retain the A18 chip, manufactured using TSMC‘s second-generation 3nm process (N3E), and continue with 8GB of RAM, mirroring its predecessor.

This is a departure from an earlier report by Digital Chat Station which suggested that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will be beefed up with 12GB RAM. For now it appears that 12GB RAM will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Air, and the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

One notable enhancement is the introduction of a 6.3-inch OLED display featuring a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, a feature previously exclusive to Pro models . This upgrade promises smoother visuals and improved responsiveness. Ross Young confirmed this increase in screen size, including an increased display size for the iPhone 17 Air at 6.6-inch.

Camera improvements include a new 24MP front-facing camera, doubling the resolution of the iPhone 16’s 12MP sensor, aiming to deliver sharper selfies and better video call quality . The rear camera setup is expected to consist of a 48MP wide lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, maintaining the dual-camera configuration.

Design-wise, the iPhone 17 is likely to resemble the iPhone 16, with subtle refinements for a sleeker appearance. The device is projected to launch in September 2025, aligning with Apple’s traditional release schedule.

While the iPhone 17 base model may not offer groundbreaking changes, the combination of a higher refresh rate display and an improved front camera could appeal to users seeking modest upgrades without the premium price tag of Pro models.
