Apple has officially seeded the release candidate (RC) for iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4, signaling that the public release is just around the corner.
If no major bugs are discovered, this RC build is expected to be the final version users will get.
But beyond the usual “bug fixes and improvements,” iOS 26.4 quietly solves a few real problems users have had with Apple’s ecosystem.
The real upgrade: Apple Music finally gets smarter (and more useful)
Apple Music has always lagged behind when it comes to discovery and personalization. iOS 26.4 attempts to fix that.
With Playlist Playground, users can now generate playlists using simple text prompts inside Apple Music.
Think:
- “Workout playlist with high energy”
- “Late night chill songs”
- “Road trip vibes”
Instead of manually curating or relying on algorithm guesses, you can now tell Apple Music exactly what you want.
There’s also a new “Concerts Near You” feature that surfaces local events based on your listening habits, turning Apple Music into more of a discovery hub rather than just a streaming app.
Video podcasts are finally native (and this is a big deal)
Apple is also making a serious push into video. With iOS 26.4, Apple Podcasts now supports native video podcasting.
This means creators can:
- upload and distribute video episodes directly
- integrate with recommendations and editorial picks
- monetize video content inside Apple’s ecosystem
For users, it solves a long-standing friction point: no more jumping between apps just to watch a podcast episode.
Small features that quietly improve daily use
Beyond the headline features, iOS 26.4 includes a set of smaller upgrades that actually impact everyday usage:
- New emoji including trombone, orca, and distorted face
- Ambient music widget for quick access to background audio
- Improved sleep tracking with average bedtime metrics
- Stolen Device Protection enabled by default
That last one is particularly important. Apple is essentially removing the “you forgot to turn it on” problem for a critical security feature.

The RC build is typically stable enough for daily use, but as always, installing on a primary device carries some risk.
Should you install iOS 26.4 RC or wait?
If you’ve been waiting for:
- better music discovery in Apple Music
- a more complete podcast experience
- incremental but meaningful quality-of-life upgrades
then iOS 26.4 is worth the update.
However, if you’re not on the beta track already, waiting for the public rollout (likely within days) is the safer move.
