Apple is getting closer to enabling video playback in CarPlay, and the first beta of iOS 26.4 reveals how the feature could work, including early support for the Apple TV app.
Although CarPlay video is not available to users yet, iOS 26.4 appears to be the first version where the feature is visibly taking shape behind the scenes.
CarPlay video support appears in iOS 26.4
At WWDC 2025, Apple confirmed that iOS 26 would introduce support for video playback in CarPlay. The company also made two restrictions clear:
- Video will only play while the vehicle is parked
- Automakers must enable support in their systems
With the release of the first developer beta of iOS 26.4, references to CarPlay video have surfaced in the system code. This suggests Apple is finalizing the infrastructure required for rollout.

Apple TV app in CarPlay
The beta includes support references for the Apple TV app, indicating that it will likely be among the first apps compatible with CarPlay video playback.
Developer Thomas Dye demonstrated a simulated version of the Apple TV interface running inside a virtual CarPlay environment. The demo shows:
- A dedicated video playback interface
- Full screen viewing on the CarPlay display
- Native media controls designed for in car use
While this may not represent the final shipping design, it looks like a polished and intentional implementation.
Moving video between iPhone and CarPlay
The demo also reveals a new interface element that allows users to move video between an iPhone and the connected CarPlay screen.
This appears designed for apps that do not have a dedicated CarPlay version. Instead of requiring a native CarPlay app, video content may be transferable to the vehicle display when supported and when the car is parked.
If this behavior remains in the final release, it could significantly expand how video apps work with CarPlay.
New video section in settings
Another discovery in iOS 26.4 is a new Video section inside Settings that appears when a CarPlay system supports video playback.
This suggests Apple is treating CarPlay video as a system level feature, rather than limiting it to specific apps. It also reinforces that automaker support will be required for activation.
