Apple rarely competes on price in the laptop market. For years, entry-level Macs started near $999 with the MacBook Air. That changed with the launch of the MacBook Neo, Apple’s most affordable laptop ever, starting at $599.

In my opinion, the Neo isn’t just a cheaper Mac. It signals a strategic move into the budget laptop space, putting pressure on Chromebooks and Windows laptops that have dominated schools and entry-level computing for years.

Why the MacBook Neo is a game-changer

The base Neo comes with:

  • A 13-inch Liquid Retina display
  • Apple A18 Pro chip
  • 8GB unified memory
  • 256GB storage
  • Up to 16 hours of battery life
  • Four aluminum color options

For students and education buyers, Apple offers discounts that bring the price down to around $499, directly competing with Chromebooks.

Chromebooks became popular for being cheap, simple, and easy to manage in schools. Devices often sell between $200 and $500, which allowed districts to deploy them at scale. But the MacBook Neo challenges this model in several ways:

Hardware Quality
Many budget laptops rely on plastic builds and lower-quality displays. Apple offers aluminum construction, high resolution, and long battery life. Personally, over the years I’ve found myself compromising on laptop specs for a quality build staying away fom plastics. I’m sure the perceived premium quality could justify the slightly higher price for many buyers.

Full Desktop Software
Chromebooks rely on web apps and Android apps. macOS supports a full desktop ecosystem, including professional software and development tools. In my view, this gives students more flexibility and future-proofing.

Apple Ecosystem Lock-In
Once a user enters the Apple ecosystem, they tend to stay there. Features like AirDrop, iMessage, and iPhone integration make switching away harder over time. If a student already uses an iPhone, the Neo is a natural companion.

Windows Central Macbook Neo Vs Windows Laptops

The folks over at Windows Central are running a poll on whether midrange Windows laptops will lose ground to the MacBook Neo. At the time of writing an overwhelming 81% of readers believe it will. Of course that includes a resounding yes from me as well.

Windows budget laptops face a tough challenge

Windows laptops usually compete on flexibility and performance. The MacBook Neo sits in a tough spot for manufacturers because it combines several strengths at once.

According to Apple, the A18 Pro chip delivers up to 50 percent faster everyday performance than a leading Intel Core Ultra 5 laptop in certain tasks. Even if real-world results vary, I believe this will surprise many first-time Mac buyers. Remember the MacBook Air M1? Well, the performance sits right around there and it’s certainly a desirable place to bet at at the $599 mark.

In fact the A18 Pro is as good as the M5 for everyday tasks… yes really!

Take a look at this single-core benchmark score of the Apple M5 vs the A18 Pro.

M5 Vs A18 Pro Benchmark

Sure the M5 is faster, but to put things into perspective, the Apple M2 and M3 come in at single-core scores of 2587 and 3077 respectively in Geekbench. The chips were plenty fast for everyday tasks back then and even now. So all that talk about buying used older MacBook Air or Pro models now requires recalibration.

Keep in mind, educational institutes will not be buying second hand machines and the MacBook Neo could become an easy pick for many considering the price to performance ratio Apple’s budget laptop now offers.

Many budget Windows laptops still struggle with short battery life, slower processors, and lower build quality. I see the Neo as a strategic move: Apple is betting that “good enough” performance plus premium hardware will win over buyers who otherwise would go Windows or Chromebook.

Apple’s long-term play: Switch from PC to Mac

Apple knows affordability alone won’t convert everyone. That’s why the MacBook Neo launch came with a dedicated Switch from PC to Mac tab.

At $599, the MacBook Neo is not just a laptop. It is Apple’s entry point to capture first-time Mac users, expand ecosystem adoption, and force competitors to rethink pricing and value in the budget laptop market.
