Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce a new entry-level MacBook, but increasing component costs could complicate its pricing strategy.

According to a new report from Digitimes, Apple’s long-rumored affordable MacBook is nearing mass production, with volume shipments expected to begin in March. The launch timeline suggests an announcement could happen very soon, potentially as part of Apple’s upcoming media events.

Production timeline and shipment targets

Supply chain sources cited in the report estimate that Apple could ship 15 to 16 million units of the new MacBook within its first two years.

Mass production was initially planned for late 2025 but was delayed into the first quarter of 2026. The shift reportedly stemmed from supply chain constraints and cost pressures.

Now, production appears to be back on track.

Component costs are rising

Apple is facing broader industry challenges, particularly:

  • Higher memory pricing
  • Increased battery costs

These cost pressures are raising questions about how aggressive Apple can be with pricing.

Early rumors suggested a starting price of $599, similar to the promotional pricing once seen for the MacBook Air during major retail discounts.

However, more recent estimates now place the device in the $699 to $749 range, which would still position it as Apple’s most affordable new laptop, but not as disruptive as initially expected.

What we know about the hardware

The low-cost MacBook is expected to feature:

  • A 12.9-inch display
  • The A18 Pro chip
  • A thinner and lighter design than current MacBook Air models

At 12.9 inches, it would become the smallest Mac laptop in Apple’s lineup, undercutting the 13.6-inch MacBook Air.

According to reporting from Bloomberg, Apple has tested multiple color options, including:

  • Light yellow
  • Light green
  • Blue
  • Pink
  • Silver
  • Dark gray

This color palette suggests Apple may be positioning the device toward students and mainstream consumers rather than professional users.
