Apple is in talks with OpenAI and Anthropic to power a smarter Siri with AI. A deal could bring ChatGPT or Claude tech to future iPhones while Apple builds its own models.
Apple’s Plan to Supercharge Siri? Borrow AI Brains from OpenAI or Anthropic
Siri may soon get a serious AI upgrade, and Apple might not be building it alone. According to Bloomberg, Apple is exploring deals with OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Anthropic (Claude) to power a smarter, more capable Siri using a third-party large language model (LLM).
Why Apple Needs Help with Siri
Apple has struggled to keep up in the AI race. Although it announced shiny new Apple Intelligence features at WWDC 2024 for iOS 18 and iPhone 16, key Siri AI upgrades were delayed until iOS 26, and now further pushed to iOS 26.4 for 2026. The delay frustrated users, and sparked lawsuits.

Enter: OpenAI and Anthropic. Both companies are working on LLMs that are compatible with Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, meaning they could run AI tasks privately and securely, somethin that is Apple’s top priority.
Anthropic: The Current Front-Runner
According to the report, Anthropic’s Claude models are currently the best fit for Siri. Apple and Anthropic have even discussed multi-billion-dollar deals for long-term access to Claude AI. But nothing’s final, especially since OpenAI is already integrated into Siri for iOS 18, allowing it to answer complex questions.

Apple may be hedging its bets, keeping both options open while it continues training its own LLM behind the scenes.
What’s Next?
If all goes to plan, LLM-powered Siri will land in iOS 27. In the meantime, expect Apple to continue leaning on ChatGPT in iOS 18 and roll out more personalized features in iOS 26.
