Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 are right around the corner, and the leaks are finally heating up. The latest rumor? The charging case is getting slimmer and will reportedly drop the pairing button altogether — a move inspired by last year’s AirPods 4.
What’s Changing
In a post on X, @asherdipps dropped some key changes that the AirPods Pro 3 could go through.
- Smaller charging case: more pocketable, less bulk.
- No pairing button: setup and resets handled entirely through software.
This could make Apple’s two flagship AirPods models look nearly identical — a deliberate step toward a unified design language.
The info has been seconded by the prolific Majin Bu as well, albeit with some skepticism.
One of the key updates concerns the charging case, which, according to a well-known accessory manufacturer, will see a slight reduction in size compared to the current model. However, after consulting with case producers, I obtained photos and dimensions of the cases, which surprisingly appear almost identical to those of previous models.

Why It Matters
At first glance, shrinking the case and killing the button feels like small tweaks. But this is Apple we’re talking about — nothing is ever that simple.
Apple’s philosophy has always been to remove friction points: headphone jacks, home buttons, ports, and now… pairing buttons. By eliminating the reset option on the case, Apple is signaling total confidence in its software reliability.
The problem? For many users, that button isn’t just for pairing. It’s the panic button when AirPods glitch — audio desync, random disconnects, or the dreaded “one bud working” bug. Without it, users may have to fully rely on iOS software resets. That’s bold. Maybe too bold.
Bigger Picture
The AirPods Pro 2 launched in 2022, and three years later, we’re finally getting the first major design refresh. If the rumors hold true, AirPods Pro 3 will be:
- Lighter and sleeker.
- More consistent with AirPods 4.
- Another step toward Apple’s vision of invisible, frictionless tech.
But the question remains: is Apple simplifying, or stripping away useful features in the name of minimalism?
The 404 Take
I’m all in for a smaller case, but if Apple is removing the pairing button, iOS better have a flawless “reset AirPods” shortcut baked in. Because nothing’s worse than expensive earbuds you can’t fix on the fly. Apple is expected to announced the new AirPods at its ‘Awe Dropping‘ event on September 9.
What do you think? Would you miss the pairing button, or do you trust Apple’s “it just works” approach?
