After years without a major update, Apple has officially introduced the successor to its premium over-ear headphones. The new AirPods Max 2 bring several long-awaited improvements, including a more powerful audio chip, better noise canceling, and a range of new smart features.

The new model will be available to order starting March 25, with shipments expected to begin in early April.

H2 chip powers improved noise canceling

The most important upgrade in the new AirPods Max 2 is the addition of the Apple H2 chip.

This chip already powers other recent AirPods models and brings significantly improved performance compared to the H1 chip used in the original AirPods Max.

According to Apple, the H2 chip enables up to 1.5× more effective Active Noise Cancellation, allowing the headphones to block more background noise for a quieter listening experience.

Apple also says the sound quality is cleaner, richer, and more detailed, especially when paired with features like Personalized Spatial Audio.

Transparency mode gets an upgrade

In addition to better noise canceling, Transparency mode has also been improved.

The new signal processing system powered by the H2 chip and microphone array makes outside sounds feel more natural and less artificial, allowing users to stay aware of their surroundings while listening.

Several new AirPods features arrive on Max

Because the previous AirPods Max used the older H1 chip, many newer AirPods features were never supported on the headphones.

With the move to the H2 chip, the AirPods Max 2 finally gain a number of capabilities already found on newer AirPods models.

These include:

  • Live Translation
  • Adaptive Audio
  • Conversation Awareness
  • Voice Isolation
  • Studio-quality audio recording
  • Loud Sound Reduction
  • Siri interactions via head gestures
  • Camera Remote

For users familiar with AirPods Pro, these features will feel familiar, but this is the first time they have appeared on Apple’s over-ear headphones.

Lossless audio still supported with cable

Like the previous generation, the new AirPods Max 2 support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected using the included USB-C cable.

Wireless playback still relies on Apple’s standard Bluetooth audio system.

Pricing and availability

The AirPods Max 2 will continue to target the premium headphone market.

  • Price: $549
  • Pre-orders: March 25
  • Shipping: Early April

The headphones will be available in the same color lineup as the latest USB-C AirPods Max models:

  • Midnight
  • Starlight
  • Orange
  • Purple
  • Blue

A long-awaited refresh

The original AirPods Max launched in 2020 and had not received a major hardware update since then.

With the addition of the H2 chip and several modern AirPods features, the AirPods Max 2 represent the first significant upgrade to Apple’s premium headphones in years.

For existing AirPods Max users, the improved noise canceling and expanded feature set may finally provide a compelling reason to upgrade.
